Nov. 2nd, 2010 09:34 amYay! I voted!
And for some reason, Philly had a question on the ballot asking if we wanted there to be a clause that City contracts can't discriminate based on race, national origin, age, sexual orientation, ancestry, gender identity, or disability. Hooray for progress!
On the other hand, why doesn't Philly already have a nondiscrimination clause?

They found the dancer gene!

Apparently, I have an awesome serotonin transporter and arginine vasopressin receptor 1a. Which means that, opposed to other people (including athletes), I am of the dancer "type" which is:
"a heightened sense of communication, often of a symbolic and ceremonial nature, and a strong spiritual personality trait."
That doesn't sound like me at all. ;)
Though I'm curious about how they tested dancers against athletes. I would like to see a comparison with dancers and other artists, who I think we'd actually have more in common with than athletes.

As some of you know, we moved to a new neighborhood a few months ago. I'm SO SO very glad we did today.
The Schuylkill river rose 21 feet today, a the neighborhood we used to live in flooded. Some people (who admittedly lived way closer to the river than we did--the neighborhood is on a serious incline--we lived about seven blocks from the river and twice as many stories up) had to be evacuated from their apartment building by boat this morning. We had several inches of running water right outside our front door every single time it rained while we lived there, so I can't imagine how it would have been trying to get to work this morning with major roads flooded.
And over in our new neighborhood, there were some puddles. It didn't affect our days at all.
It was raining like CRAZY all night, though. My sister and I were walking home in the storm yesterday evening and my shoes are still soaking wet.

Sep. 27th, 2010 10:07 pmAfter writing about my childhood the other day, I was sitting out on my back porch/my backyard (here in Philly, back yards are back porches) and reading, when I decided to sing to the plants like I used to when I was a kid. So I sang a song of thanks to our herbs and flowers.
I think I'll be doing it more. It was really wonderful.

Our first brew was a delicious Amber Ale, with a beautiful golden color. After much debate, we decided to name it a kenning for Gold-- "Gullveig's Joy."
Our second beer is a coffee stout. Also quite delicious. In a fit of brilliance this afternoon, my sister decided we should name it "Gullveig's Joe."
